Dr. Cheryl Duzenli (PhD, FCCPM)

Dr. Cheryl Duzenli (PhD, FCCPM) is the Professional Practice leader for Medical Physics at BC Cancer Vancouver.  Dr. Duzenli oversees the clinical operation of the medical physics department in the BC Cancer radiation therapy program in Vancouver, where approximately 4000 patients receive radiation therapy annually.   Dr. Duzenli has received an MSc in Medical Radiation Physics at McGill University, a PhD in Medical Physics from the University of Alberta and a BSc in Physics from Queens University. Dr. Duzenli has been at BC Cancer since 1995.

Research Areas

Dr. Cheryl Duzenli studies the interactions of radiation with biological tissues, organs and materials in order to optimize treatments for patients undergoing radiation therapy for cancer. Approximately 50 percent of cancer patients receive radiation as part of their treatment, and approximately 10,000 patients in British Columbia benefit from radiation therapy every year. Dr. Duzenli’s recent research is focused on how carbon fibre materials can be used in medical devices to reduce treatment side effects and improve the quality of life for patients. She is currently the PI of a randomized controlled trial assessing the clinical benefits of a novel ultra-light carbon fibre device (CARA, Carbon fibre Adjustable Re-useable Accessory) designed and built at BC Cancer for breast cancer radiotherapy. This device supports the breast to reduce dose to lung, heart and skin while improving the accuracy of the delivered treatment to the breast. Dr. Duzenli’s other research interests include instrumentation for radiation dosimetry and recently ultra-high dos rate (UHDR) radiotherapy.
