Arash Javanmardi, PhD Student
Arash completed his BSc (Honours) in Biophysics at the University of British Columbia and his MSc in Medical Physics at Toronto Metropolitan University. His earlier work ranged from developing 3D-printed PET phantoms to detecting nanobubbles in cancer cell lines using optical coherence tomography.
He is now a PhD student supervised by Dr. Hal Clark at BC Cancer Surrey, where he uses advanced diffusion MRI to map how radiation sensitivity varies across subregions of the parotid glands in head and neck cancer patients. His goal is to inform treatment planning strategies that spare the most vulnerable regions and reduce xerostomia (dry mouth).
Alongside his research, Arash works as a physics assistant at BC Cancer Vancouver, where he helps develop and train RapidPlan knowledge-based planning models and contributes to head and neck treatment planning optimization. Outside the lab, he enjoys hiking on the North Shore mountains, organizing intramural sports leagues with friends, and playing beach volleyball at Spanish Banks in the summer.
